Review: Tony's Chocolonely 10th anniversary limited editions

Tony's Chocolonely is celebrating their 10th anniversary this year and they created three limited edition chocolate bar flavors for this special occasion: milk chocolate lemon cheesecake, milk chocolate popcorn discodip, and dark chocolate almond sea salt. You might have already seen me indulge in Tony's Chocolonely chocolate treats during Sinterklaas, but I also got these three limited edition chocolate bars as Sinterklaas gifts.

At first, I tried to find them at the local Bijenkorf department store, but the milk chocolate popcorn disco dip flavor was totally sold out. It happened to be the flavor that I wanted to try the most. My last resort was hoping to find all three of them at the Jamin candy store and luckily they did have all three flavors!

The price of €3.50 for one chocolate bar (180 g) is a bit expensive, but you get a really cool wrapper with colorful prints and a gold colored foil on the inside, whereas they normally use a silver colored foil. I also didn't want to miss out on the interesting new flavors.

This chocolate bar flavor is the third chocolate bar flavor that they had to release fashionably late. I believe they initially wanted to create one with figs (milk chocolate fig walnuts), but it is still somewhat of a challenge to create it. I hope that they find a way to make one soon, as it sounds really delicious.

As a replacement, they introduced this milk chocolate lemon cheesecake flavor very last minute. I don't know if that's the reason why it isn't living up to its promise, but I find it not up to par. To me, it is like a milk chocolate bar with a faint lemon end taste. The individual elements of the freeze dried yogurt parts, the freeze dried lemon crunch parts, and the buttery cookie crumbs were done very well, but the taste isn't very balanced. I don't taste it in every bite and I never really get the right amount of each, reminding me of the flavor of a lemon cheesecake.

Tony's Chocolonely 10th anniversary limited edition chocolate bar: dark chocolate (51%), almond, and sea salt

This chocolate bar is the one that I was the least interested in, but since the Tony's Chocolonely milk chocolate caramel sea salt flavor tastes so good, I wanted to give this one a try. Sadly, it wasn't that amazing. The crunchy whole almonds had a bit too burned (as in: bitter) flavor, which didn't work too well with the already bitter dark chocolate. I could taste some sea salt pieces here and there, but it didn't do much for the flavors. The three ingredients (dark chocolate, almond, and sea salt) just didn't blend too well with each other.

Tony's Chocolonely 10th anniversary limited edition chocolate bar: milk chocolate popcorn discodip

I saved the best for last, as I was pleasantly surprised by the milk chocolate popcorn discodip flavor. There were plenty of crunchy and colorful disco dip (the multi-color, caviar nails like, sprinkles that I used to get over my soft serve ice cream as a kid) on the top part of the chocolate bar and savory, mini popcorn bits on the bottom.

The disco dip doesn't really have an outspoken flavor, as it mainly gives the chocolate bar a playful appearance and an unusual crunch here and there. The popcorn is also best not to enjoy on its own as it has turned compressed and chewy, but it gives the chocolate bar a really nice, rich popcorn flavor, which blends well with the sweet milk chocolate.
